Dennis Chipman - Former GM Anaheim

Dennis Chipman - was there ever a GM who was a bigger fan of scouting and drafting?
Famous for his humor and his quotes. The second inductee in the FHL Hall of Fame, Dennis passed away suddenly in early 2000 and has been missed ever since.

REMEMBERING DENNIS
A Sad day for Hockey.

I wanted to let you know some sad news. My father is Dennis Chipman - who owns the Anaheim Mighty Ducks team in one of the fantasy hockey leagues that you operate. My father passed away last week after a series of heart problems. I know he enjoyed this fantasy hockey league and on behalf of him I would like to say thanks for all the good times this provided him with. You may give this team to a new owner or disband the team as you wish.

Take Care,

W. Chipman

Comments from some of the FHL GMs who remembered him
with email
after hearing the sad news:

Very sad news about Denis. I knew he had heart troubles as he had some major surgery last year. He was also very dedicated to our league as he phoned me up from his hosiptal room (in Edmonton) and asked me to manage his team while he was recuperating. I had a number of chats with him while he was in the Edmonton Hospital.
Denis came and visited us once and we had a good laugh about hockey. He was a fun guy and my single most trading partner. In fact, I had a trade with him this year that involved future considerations. The league will never be the same without Denis.

A sad time... Andy Weaver

AAAUUUGGHHHH!!!
Dennis and I had a tradition going since the first season. We always made a pretty "blockbusterish" deal just before the preseason. ANA-MTL trades always happened and when I took on ATL, I managed to make an expansion deal with him.

Now what will I do? Come pre-season time, there's going to be a pretty big void. 8-(
Can we pass a rule that says FHL members must live forever?? *sigh* Just when I had gotten over the news of Jon's death, I have to start all over again for
Dennis.
Thanks for the memories,
- Jean Duteau

I'm sure that Dennis, now looking back at it from wherever he is now, probably thinks that going heavy on prospects in the last few seasons was probably not the best long-term strategy for him :)

I met Dennis only once, when he visited Weaver's lab in Victoria. He seemed like a very fun guy. A real fan of oldtime NHL hockey, especially if related to the Boston Bruins.

Once again we are losing an original owner in this league. It's starting to be a really sad season for the FHL...

I regret not having had the chance to meet Dennis. He was in Albany briefly in 1995, but we couldn't get together. Many a trade has been made between EDM and ANA, and I'll miss bickering with him over the value of his
prospects. :)

===========================

I am flabbergasted and words are hard to measure out well upon this news.Dennis was in my mind one of the more interesting and enjoyable GMs to deal with and I personally greatly enjoyed his sense of humor.
I too never actually met the Duck-man, but as with Jon, his loss feels as real and hurtful as losing any friend. I'd like to think that Dennis counted me and others as friends, because I personally think of you guys that way. We are a brotherhood that though we don't always agree - we certainly share a great common love for the game. Though we compete, I still think of each of you as I would a team mate if we had a hockey team of of our own.

Some close buddies are like line-mates, the ones who always pass you the puck, or cover for your mistakes in the slot.

Some guys see spot action on your line, or are defence men, playing the game their own way but appreciating your efforts in your own role. Others may be like guys hoping to move up and bump you from your spot on the power play or first line, but despite that, they still appreciate you as a part of the team and want you to do well.

Paul and Mark (Stats & Commish) are like our Goalies, we may abandon them at times when they could use our help, and in practice, we may frustrate them with high shots...but they are still well appreciated and we know we can't do without them.

I guess I'll try to send a small note to the young Chipman to express my personal condolences. I suggest it might be nice for the family if we all sent a little note saying how we enjoyed knowing him and will miss him.
